There are a number of ‘highlights’ on each expedition. ‘Highlights’ are the activities that everyone booking on a particular expedition will want to experience. Therefore, Savannah Overland Expeditions has decided to include the price of all ‘highlights’ relevant to each expedition into the total price payable (Part A / Part B).
In addition to the tour highlights included in your expedition, there are also a number of ‘optional’ activities and excursions you can do while on your expedition. Optional activities are activities that not everyone will want to take part in or try.
Below is a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, list of optional activities and excursions available at each destination.
Optional activities and excursions are NOT included in either Part 1 or Part 2 of your tour cost. They are an additional cost payable by each person if they wish to take part in that specific activity or excursion. You only pay for the optional activities you choose to do. Some of the optional activities are adrenaline activities while others are more subdued. You choose the ones that appeal to you; it could be all of them or only some of them. Optional activities and excursions should be budgeted for while planning your expedition.
Optional activities and excursions are provided by independent local third party suppliers and are generally paid for en route, most times in US$.
Please note, if you are booking on a Gorilla Adventure all costs associated with the Gorilla permit MUST be paid for, in full, at the time of booking to ensure availability.
Most times the tour leader can assist with booking and arranging optional activities and excursions with third party independent local tour operators on behalf of our passengers, however, Savannah Overland Expeditions Ltd and its employees will not accept any responsibility for the outcome of its passengers when participating in such activities or excursions.
Experience has shown that it is advisable to budget for taking part in all the ‘optional activities and excursions’ offered on your chosen expedition. It is better to budget for optional activities beforehand, even if you don’t think there is any way you will do it, have no interest in doing it or have never dreamt of doing it before. We generally find that people want to and are more willing to try something new that may be out of their comfort zone while they are on holiday.
It is better to budget for everything and have money left over if you decide not to do all the optional activities than not have enough money and miss out on an amazing experience that you may never get the opportunity to do again.
Remember this is your experience – we want to help you have a unique African adventure, but you will only get out of it what you put into it.
You need to approach your travels with an open mind, be prepared to face some challenges and take part in some activities and extreme experiences that will truly make this a journey of a lifetime!
Some of the optional activities will push you well and truly out of your normal comfort zone but the experience can be character building and the memories will remain with you for life.
“You can’t cross the ocean merely by standing and looking at it”
Below is a list of the most common optional activities available in each country. Prices should be used as a guide only as unexpected increases may occur due to fluctuations in local and international economies and exchange rates. All prices are quoted in US$, except for the Gorilla permit which is quoted in GBP£.
